The Morley Way goes back to my childhood. My Mom used to say to us, “That’s not The Morley Way.” This saying was usually in response to myself or my brothers doing something we shouldn’t, or not putting forth our best effort. I don’t remember her telling us what The Morley Way was, but rather what it wasn’t. The Morley Way was simple: do the right thing, the right way; be a good person, work hard and have a positive attitude.
I used to think my attitude was a product of my environment. My dad would tell me to change my attitude when I was in a “mood”. The idea of choosing to be positive when I didn’t feel that way was crazy to me. It’s not about being happy when you’re sad or angry but about choosing to be in control. We have the power to be in control, we can choose to see the negative or the positive. What we choose to focus on will become our reality.
Feeling good about yourself happens when you have put forth your best effort. A sense of pride and accomplishment isn’t a given, the cost is hard work. Being a good person, having a good attitude, and working hard are all essential to being proud of who you are. That is what The Morley Way is all about.
We all have a story, a past full of experiences. We also have a future, decided by the actions we take in the present. It is easy to think up a dream lifestyle or an ideal version of your life, but difficult to see the blueprint. When I think of my future self, I know I want to be proud of that person. I want to see a person who doesn’t make decisions based on his past self but who uses his ideal future to guide decisions. We all know what the right decisions are, what we should do. We should wake up early, we should eat healthy, we should workout, we should read more, we should be more present. There are a lot of “shoulds”.
Life, today more than ever, is full of distractions. Having a goal, a purpose, a reason for why you are going to do better is so crucial for accomplishing your goals. Find your reason why, commit to the goal, and consistently go after it. Let the why be your driving force for getting out of bed, for eating healthy, for going to the gym. This doesn’t mean you won’t have hard times, days that test you, or people that derail you. Your why needs to be bigger and more powerful than everything else, the why is what will keep you on track.
Even with a strong why, solid work ethic, and a positive attitude, there will be days or weeks that test you. When you are struggling, I want to be a positive force in your life. I want to be a person that encourages you to chase your dreams, someone who tells you what you can do, instead of what you can’t do. Strive to be your best self. Let me help you get there, The Morley Way.
